Textiles recycling gaining global investments

Textiles recycling gaining global investments

Projects in locations ranging from Pennsylvania to Taiwan are targeting landfill diversion options for discarded clothing and fabric.

Research and investments are being made in several parts of the world to use mechanical recycling processes to turn discarded clothing and fabric into new products.

Taipei, Taiwan-based SAYA (and its parent company Nan Ya Plastics) refers to itself as “the world’s largest manufacturer of recycled PET, repurposing over 75 billion bottles every year.” Now, under the SAYA brand, the firm says it is engaging in research and development (R&D) efforts “to focus on the critical recycling and sustainability issues that face the textile and garment industry and redefine what’s possible in renewal.”

The company says it has been seeking textile “scrap, cutting waste, overstock fabric and soon, used garments” to convert into new products via some of its newly developed methods.

SAYA says its RSCUW process “reduces waste by 30 percent per yard by recycling cutting scraps and overstock rolls of fabric, which has historically ended up in landfills or is stored indefinitely in warehouses.”

Its RSCUW RAW product “is made from recycled fabric cutting scrap and colored PET bottles retaining their original color. The resulting knit or woven fabric has a unique heathered effect in shades from gray to nearly black.”

In development is the Garma process, which SAYA says will be available in late 2021. “This complex recycling process of used post-consumer garments will streamline the garment recycling by offering turnkey retail to fiber solutions to select brand partners.”

SAYA debuts with a focus on enhanced textile recycling

SAYA, a new name in fiber announces its debut with an expanded offering beyond recycled PET bottles including recycled cutting scrap and fabric, bringing new options to the textile industry. Nan Ya Plastics, SAYA’s parent company, is the world’s largest manufacturer of recycled PET, repurposing over 75 billion bottles every year. Now
under the brand SAYA, research and development efforts continue to focus on the critical recycling and sustainability issues that face the textile and garment industry and redefine what’s possible in renewal.

SAYA 365 continues to expand and refine the recycling of PET throughout the world. A proprietary, five-stage filtration process followed by two stages of purification result in batch optimized flakes and pellets ready to be transformed into performance fibers. The result is the SAYA renewed difference, with better tenacity strength, dyeing accuracy, and brighter whites compared to conventional recycled fibers.

  • SAYA 365 – Plastic bottles sourced from Asia and beyond. Providing consistent and cost-effective supply for sustainable options in polyester fiber.
  • SAYA Coastal – This specialized recycling program targets clean-up and renewal of discarded plastic bottles in coastal regions that would otherwise migrate out to sea (80% of ocean plastics originate from coastal land).
  • SAYA USA – Recycled polyester fibers made in our facility in Lake City, South Carolina, USA, receive this unique designation. Options include using locally or internationally recycled bottles and waste for those looking for a USA-based fiber program with full traceability and transparency.

SAYA Next seeks to innovate and provide solutions for the industrial waste problem shrouding the textile industry, including scrap, cutting waste, overstock fabric and soon, used garments. The unique programs within SAYA Next include:

  • SAYA RSCUW – Currently available, SAYA RSCUW reduces waste by 30% per yard by recycling cutting scraps and overstock rolls of fabric, which has historically ended up in landfills or is stored indefinitely in warehouses.
  • SAYA RSCUW RAW – Currently available, SAYA RSCUW RAW is made from recycled fabric cutting scrap and colored PET bottles retaining their original color. Without the bleaching and re-dying process, this effort is more energy efficient and the carbon footprint is further reduced. The resulting knit or woven fabric has a unique heathered effect in shades from grey to nearly black.
  • SAYA Garma – Currently in development. SAYA Garma will be available in late 2021. This complex recycling process of used post-consumer garments will streamline the garment recycling by offering turnkey retail to fiber solutions to select brand partners. Contact SAYA for more details.

SAYA Sustainable Fiber: Inspired by Adversity

Engineers knew they had an opportunity to make a positive impact beyond the end of the economic crisis caused by the pandemic. With the goal of perfecting and introducing new recycling technology for the textile industry, they did not allow themselves to be distracted. The result is a new collection of recycled fibers derived from fabric scrap and overruns, redefining what’s possible in textile renewal.

“We understand the critical role we play as a manufacturer in the supply chain as it relates to sustainability,” states Mike Shih of SAYA. “Being the most basic component and the first decision made during the textile and garment development process gives us the opportunity to make a positive change that can have an impact up the ladder and across all industries using textiles.”

Synthetic Fiber Maker Chromuch Teams With Promostyl For 2021 Color Guide

Synthetic Fiber Maker Chromuch Teams With Promostyl For 2021 Color Guide

Chromuch, a manufacturer of sustainable and color-rich synthetic fibers, has curated 50 colors for 2021 with trend agency and color specialist PromoSTYL.  The 2021 Color Guide includes 50 signature hues in five color collections for applications in apparel and equipment, including activewear, athleisure, tents and sleeping bags. The collections range from sophisticated and urban “Push & Go” tones to calm, but intense colors in “Drift Away.”

“With over 1,000 colors in the total palette, designers can now take a modern approach to design where sustainable sourcing and premium color come first,” a spokesperson for Chromuch said. “By partnering with PromoSTYL, we are taking the risks out of the coloring process for our customers by ensuring that the right colors hit the market at the right time.”

Chromuch noted that its solution-dyed synthetic fibers are fade-resistant, made from post-consumer recycled plastic bottles and use no water in the dyeing process. “In the world of sportswear, manufacturing times are very long because it is more technical and it is important to anticipate trends well in advance–usually around two years,” Marion Hugoo, a color specialist from PromoSTYL, said. “Tastes evolve, so you have to be as close as possible to the consumer’s aspirations.”

She said as activewear is increasingly inspired by fashion, the Chromuch collection has refined shades that are more urban and subtle.

“One of the key strengths of Chromuch is the very dense and deep colors available, and also the subtle fluorescent colors, especially the very elegant bleached fluorescent yellows,” Hugoo said. “We love their pale yellow, orange and green fluros.”

Chromuch is also introducing Chromuch Now, a developer-friendly program of competitively priced, trend-right colors that are in stock for better lead times and low minimum order quantities. The program allows developers to select PromoSTYL-curated colors while eliminating the need to color- match.

PromoSTYL is an international design and trend-forecasting agency that deciphers the latest and most relevant lifestyle and design currents that reflect the trends across design, fashion, consumer behavior and marketing to give clients a strategic edge in the marketplace.
